Happy new year! I celebrate the passing of the Gregorian calendar year 2013. Many of us will be glad to bless and say goodbye to this year…even though it is just a number! Quite a year of tempering.
You know what tempering is, right? That is the process of heating and hammering metal to make it stronger. The metal-smith heats the steel to red hot, hammers it to fold it onto itself, cools it, heats it to red hot again, and repeats the process until the steel is folded and refolded on itself many times over. This makes for the strongest steel; it was used (and maybe still is in the case of artisans) to make the best swords for fighting in battle.
My feeling is that this year has been a Tempering of the Soul year. I have seen so many of us be tried and tested, sometimes to the point of being sure we would break….but we didn’t. We expanded. We stretched and grew, and I’m convinced that the great intelligence of Life doesn’t make mistakes, that this was all for good reason.
I celebrate the new year FOR REAL on Lunar Imbolc, which also falls on the Chinese New Year….it is wisely built around the lunar calendar, which feels like REAL time to me. I make my New Year Collage during the whole month of January and feel the commitment to the year lock in around Feb. 1, or whenever the actual second new moon day from winter solstice falls.
I want to invite you to allow the month of January to be your month of reflection for the past year….seeing the memories, revisiting and touching the moments, and saying thank you to each of them. Even though it has been a Year of Tempering, we know it has made us who we are now, and we can be thankful for what Life has made us and bless it. I feel this clears the decks for the new energy to fully move in come Feb. 1.
